BYD makes electric and plug-in hybrid cars under brands including BYD, Denza, Fangchengbao and Yangwang, and sells more plug-in vehicles than any other carmaker. It also makes electric buses, trucks and forklifts.
BYD makes much of each car itself, including its own Blade batteries, electric motors and power chips. It also supplies batteries for energy storage and makes components for consumer electronics.
Wang Chuanfu founded BYD in Shenzhen in 1995 as a rechargeable battery maker, and it started making cars in 2003. Its shares trade in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and in the US as ADRs (BYDDY). Berkshire Hathaway invested in 2008.
