Meta runs Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads, used by billions of people every day, and earns nearly all of its revenue from advertising on them.

Meta is also a major AI developer, with its Llama models and the Meta AI assistant, and invests heavily in AI data centres. Its Reality Labs division makes Quest virtual reality headsets and, with EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta smart glasses.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 with fellow Harvard students, and it went public in 2012. It bought Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, and renamed itself Meta in 2021.
