Tencent runs Weixin and WeChat, the messaging super-app used by more than a billion people for chat, payments, mini programs and much more, along with the older QQ messenger.
It is the world's largest video game company by revenue, with hits like Honor of Kings and ownership of Riot Games (League of Legends) and Supercell (Clash of Clans). Tencent also runs WeChat Pay, Tencent Cloud, Tencent Video and music streaming, and develops the Hunyuan AI models.
Pony Ma (Ma Huateng) and four co-founders started Tencent in Shenzhen in 1998. It has been listed in Hong Kong since 2004, and its ADRs trade in the US as TCEHY.
