How it's read
- 129 Sept 2026 · First reading. Adds public news: once a week an AI with web search gathers dated developments on the call, Jev keeps the ones that bear on it, and reads them with the evidence on this site. (jev-1.13.0)
- 230 Sept 2026 · New method. Adds a research brief from Claude Opus 5.5 with web search (weekly, twice weekly in the last 100 days): key numbers and financials, outside odds from prediction markets and analysts, dates coming up, the base rate, and the strongest case each way. Jev reads it with the news and the evidence on this site. (jev-1.13.0)
The odds move when the evidence does, and also when what Jev is given or Jev itself changes, so each change is marked. A model's reading, not a forecast; it can be wrong.

The case for
SpaceX has huge compute (Colossus with about 1 million GPUs, and a 15–20 GW target by end-2027), a quick release pace (Grok 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 within about 10 weeks), the Cursor acquisition for coding data, and already ranks as a top-4 lab. Musk says 4.9 will match Astra/Fable class and that a 6–10T-parameter Grok 5 may beat everything. A single release that leaps ahead at the right moment before end-2027 would settle it.
The case against
The current Grok 4.7 trails Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5, and Musk himself ranks it below Opus 5.1. Grok 5 has slipped from late 2025 through Q1, Q2 and Q3 2026. SpaceX is also renting large amounts of Colossus capacity to rivals Anthropic and Google, which strengthens their position. Leaders like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google keep shipping too, so SpaceX would need to be #1 at the exact moment of settlement, on whatever benchmark is used.
Outside odds
- Manifold (LMArena, end of June 2026 market): Snapshot: 48% Google, 10% OpenAI, 11% xAI, 27% Anthropic; a shorter horizon than this prediction and an early-2026 readingManifold, 5 Feb 2026
- Elon Musk (SpaceX CEO): Says Grok 4.9 will be in the Astra/Fable class and Grok 5 "maybe better than anything."TeslaNorth, 14 Sept 2026
- Digital Applied (analyst blog): Skeptical of the timelines: xAI has a documented habit of missing its own datesDigital Applied, 23 Sept 2026

Coming up
- SpaceX Q3 2026 earnings (Investing.com date; other trackers list Nov 3 as unconfirmed): AI capex, compute and Grok updates
- Rough outer end of the expected Grok 4.8 launch window: A model finishing training in mid-September lands, on those gaps, between early October and early November.
- Approximate point by which Grok 4.9 and/or Grok 5 could plausibly have shipped; no official date has been given for either
- Settlement date; the ranking depends on which benchmark is used (LMArena vs Artificial Analysis), against rival releases from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google
Base rate. xAI/SpaceXAI has almost never held the top spot on major leaderboards: Manifold's monthly LMArena 'best company' markets through 2025 and early 2026 all went to Google, and xAI was usually priced at 0–3%. Across the past few years, the #1 position has rotated among Google, OpenAI and Anthropic.
